Google says 3-3.5 hours. Count on 4. The highway through Cañas is fast, but the mountain road to Monteverde and the unpaved final stretch add time. Fog is possible in the mountains. Our vans handle this last section with ease.

The drive from the hot Guanacaste coast up to the cool cloud forest is a wild contrast. Within 4 hours you go from 35°C to 18°C. Bring a hoodie. The road up to Monteverde through Las Juntas is scenic — coffee country, mountain views. You'll need the jacket, trust me.
