Google says 2.5-3 hours. Honestly, it's about 3.5 with the unpaved section leading into Monteverde. The road from Tilarán to Monteverde is the rough part — about 45 minutes on dirt road. Our vans handle it fine, but it does slow you down.

Leave before 8am for the best experience. The road around Lake Arenal is one of the most scenic in Costa Rica — mountains, lake, and if you're lucky, a clear view of Arenal Volcano behind you. Ask your driver to stop at the lake viewpoint near Nuevo Arenal. Bring a light jacket, Monteverde will be cooler than La Fortuna.
