Route Overview: La Fortuna to Monteverde
This route follows the northern shore of Lake Arenal through the Tilaran Mountains, offering panoramic views of the lake and surrounding volcanic landscape. The final section into Monteverde is on maintained gravel road. Total travel time is approximately 3 to 3.5 hours between two of Costa Rica's most important natural areas.

Google says 2.5-3 hours. Honestly, it's about 3.5 with the unpaved section leading into Monteverde. The road from Tilarán to Monteverde is the rough part — about 45 minutes on dirt road. Our vans handle it fine, but it does slow you down.

Pack a light jacket - you'll go from tropical warmth at Arenal to cool cloud forest (15-20°C) in Monteverde.

This is the middle leg of the Classic Triangle: SJO → La Fortuna → Monteverde → SJO. Total transport runs about $550-$750 for up to 6 passengers. Best 7-10 day itinerary in Costa Rica — volcano, cloud forest, then home. Or continue to the beach: La Fortuna → Monteverde → Tamarindo.

Leave before 8am for the best experience. The road around Lake Arenal is one of the most scenic in Costa Rica — mountains, lake, and if you're lucky, a clear view of Arenal Volcano behind you. Ask your driver to stop at the lake viewpoint near Nuevo Arenal. Bring a light jacket, Monteverde will be cooler than La Fortuna.
